DATE: Thursday, 28 October 2010
TIME: 7.30pm - 9.30pm
VENUE: Harcourt Arms, 32 Harcourt Street, W1H 4HX
MOTION: This House Believes Britain should be a Military Power of the First Rank
Since the days of the Empire Britain has been a significant military power in the world. Throughout two world wars and numerous other conflicts Britain has had a military that it can be proud of, one which stands shoulder to shoulder with the toughest military powers of the day.
However the recent austerity drive and the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have led to questions as to whether Britain is still able to measure up on the world stage. Does the world still need Britain to try to defend it? Is it still in the national interest for Britain to have a military that can be described as first rank?
Who is right? You decide.

Join the debate:
There will be four speakers in this debate, each of whom will have five minutes to make their case. After that there will be an extensive Q&A session to allow the audience plenty of time to have their own say from the floor. The motion will then be put to a vote.
There's always plenty of time to grab a drink and get settled before the event starts and we always stick around for a few more once it's over as inevitably that is always when the real debating begins.
