This House Believes that Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus

DATE: Thursday, 03 February 2011
TIME: 7.30pm
VENUE: Harcourt Arms, 32 Harcourt Street, London W1H 4HX
MOTION: This House Believes that Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus

Background:
Sexism has been back in the news recently when a conversation between two presenters on Sky Sports in which they disparaged a female assistant referee was leaked to the media. Differences between men and women have additionally been raised by the replacing of various female presenters of shows with the suspicion that they have been replaced because of their age, something that is less likely to happen with men. So what is the right response to tackling the apparent sexism in society? Should we be treating men as if they were from Mars and women from Venus? Do we need to give women better (but different) treatment? Or is the concentration on gender actually exacerbating the problem? Is it time to starting treating women exactly as we would treat men?

Who is right? You decide.

There will be four speakers in this debate, each of whom will have five minutes to make their case. After that there will be an extensive Q&A session to allow the audience plenty of time to have their own say from the floor. The motion will then be put to a vote.

There's always plenty of time to grab a drink and get settled before the event starts and we always stick around for a few more once it's over as inevitably that is always when the real debating begins.
