DATE: Thursday 15th September
TIME: 7.30pm
VENUE: Old Bank of England Pub, Strand, EC4A 2LT
MOTION: This House Would back the creation of a Palestinan State
Background:
On September 20th the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to bid for the full recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state by the United Nations. With statehood on the cards a whole range of social, political and legal issues begin to emerge from the status of the trade embargo on Palestine to whether Peace keepers would have to be deployed to protect Palestinian borders.
With Israel keen to block any international interference can the UN begin to broker a two state-solution in one of the longest running conflicts of the 20th Century? What implications does it have for settled Israelis on the West Bank? Is this first step towards peace or will it escalate violence in the region even further? Is Hamas even a legitimate government for the West to begin dialogue with?
Venue:
We will be in the The Old Bank of England pub this Thursday next to the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand. The debate will take place in the main function room opposite the bar. For directions to the pub, see here
