Venue: Harcourt Arms, 32 Harcourt Street, Baker Street, London, W1H 4HX
Date: Thursday 24th of November 2011
Time: 7:30pm - 9.30pm
Motion: This House Would form a unity government in the UK
Background:
The global sovereign debt crisis has seen the rise of a new breed of politician and a new style of politics.
Markets have punished politicians for being indecisive, unpopular or incompetent with high interest rates sending the economies of Greece, Italy and Spain into debt-death spirals. Berlusconi and Papandreou have been replaced by unelected economists seen by the markets as a 'safe set of hands' to repair, rebuild and protect the economy.
With no mandate, should technocrats be able to pass unpopular measures? Do we need stability over accountability in a time of crisis? With growth stalling in the UK, do we need technocratic leadership? Are grand coalitions, referendums or snap elections the way forward for the democratic legitimacy of austerity? Is too much democracy killing the Eurozone?
